“Google only loves you when everyone loves you first.” Wendy Piersall. The Internet is full of websites and blogs. There are more than 1.5 billion websites and blogs in the world. The statistics might be enough to scare people from creating a new website or blog. Before starting my own blog, I was scared of putting up a few letters and publishing them. However, things can get a little bit different if you can apply some tricks on your website. Search Engine Optimization has always been the talk of the town in the Digital Marketing World. In the early days, just writing and publishing content would have generated thousands of page views on your site. However, things are a little different now. There are some handful of techniques but here are 9 big ones.
1. User Experience and their intent
It does not matter if you publish hundreds of blog posts or acquire thousands of backlinks unless your website is user-friendly. More than 65 percent of total web traffic comes from mobile devices. If your website is not mobile-friendly, don’t expect to get thousands of traffic or any. “Starting July 1, 2019, mobile-first indexing is enabled by default for all new websites” - Google. If you are using WordPress, make sure to use the AMP plugin.
There are thousands of websites that are mobile-friendly and have a great design. Still, these websites are getting very low traffic or no traffic. Those contents were only written for google crawlers to index those pages or posts. There was once a time when Google could be fooled but not now. Make sure to pour your emotion and write your best so that google could appreciate your content.
2. Go beyond Google
More than 92 percent of total website traffic coming from Google. There is no doubt you should prioritize Google as your main search engine but never ignore the rest. 7 percent of total website traffic might not look big visually. Why don’t you take a moment and calculate 7 percent of trillions of search? Baidu, Yandex, and Yahoo should not be ignored while indexing your content. Baidu is the most popular search engine is
China. Microsoft is partnering with Internet search engine giant Baidu to expand its market in China.
3. Long and Qualitative content
Why don’t I clarify the point with an example? Suppose, Steve Smith has written a blog on the importance of Technology in our daily life briefly. Shane Watson has written another blog on the same topic but his content is long, well explained and gives you all the information required. Which blog post do you think will rank well? There is no doubt
Shane Watson's content will rank higher because Google prefers long and qualitative content. The average content length for a web page that ranks in the top 10 of Google has at least 2000 words. The higher you go up, the chances of getting ranked on the top increases.
4. Get Ready for Voice Search
Siri was first introduced in 2011, Google Assistance was introduced in 2016 and Alexa was introduced in 2014. Samsung is slowly trying to enter the market with Bixby and other companies are trying their best to catch up. Voice assistants are getting smart and people are loving the change in trend. Many local and international business is optimizing their website for voice search. Here are some top reasons why people prefer voice assistants over “traditional devices”.
Make sure your content is optimized for voice search. Analyze the keywords using Ubersuggest, Answer the public and other keyword research tools. Make sure your content is structured properly. Make sure your site is super fast. There might come a time when Google uses a voice search for indexing replacing mobile indexing. Affiliate Marketers are scratching the head with the improve voice search.
5. Technical SEO
Aside from keyword analysis and optimization, few technical tweaks must be done in order to make your website optimized for search engines. Make sure your domain name is easy to remember and catchy. Let me give you an example, Smith A has a domain name toptravel.com and Watson has a domain name worldoftravel45.com. Both of these sites are travel guide blogs. Why don’t you take a moment and think which website will get more traffic? Both of these blogs can receive the same amount of traffic organically. But when it comes to direct traffic, toptravel.com will get more traffic because the domain name is easy to remember and is short.
Apart from URL optimization, make sure your website has an XML sitemap. A sitemap is an XML file that contains a list of URLs from the site. If you are using WordPress as your platform, Yoast SEO provides you an automatic way to generate the sitemap. If you are using other platforms, a free tool (Sitemap Generator) is available to generate the sitemap. Sitemaps make it easier for Google to find your content.
Make your websites use SSL for security. Security might not a major ranking factor for Google but it’s a huge deal for your customers or visitors. For example, you own an E-commerce site called shopnow.com. The website is eye-catchy, optimized properly and has great content. But your site lacks SSL. More than 70 percent of your total visitors will bounce away from your site without making any purchase. Customers are afraid of getting their credentials stolen. Let’s Encrypt provides free SSL for your websites. Apply it.
6. Site speed and AMP
I have read thousands of blog posts stating Speed as the major ranking factor for Google. I spent hours and days optimizing the site for speed. I thought I made substantial progress but I was so wrong. However, I was able to make my site faster using some easy techniques and a few tweaks.
Why don’t you take a moment and think of some reasons why your website might be slow? Are you choosing the right web server? Have you compressed images on your websites? Is your website size bigger than average? Make sure to analyze everything before you take any further decisions.
7. Try beyond text
There was once a time when writing only text-based content worked for many bloggers and businesses. However, things are a little different now. With the rise of YouTube, video-based content is getting popular daily. You can create a free YouTube account and start posting videos. You don’t need to create your own videos, just have to react to others. I am just kidding. I am just baffled with how much reaction videos get views.
Apart from Videos, make sure you embed some images on your blog post. If your blog post only contains text, your audience might get bored. Why don’t you add some attractive images on your blog post? A single image could give more information than 500 words blog post. Try to use some memes on your blog post as well so that your work looks entertaining and keeps your audience interested.
8. Backlink and Internal Linking
Backlinks have always been the major ranking factor in the search engines. Backlinks are simply the number of links that are coming from other sites. Acquiring backlinks is not as easy as it used to be. Back in the days, if you gave a link to someone, he/she will do the same. I think many people tried sending emails to many professionals or websites asking to link back. The techniques do not seem to work in the present day.
Rather than sending 100 emails asking for backlinks, why don’t you write for them? Guest posting has been a popular method to acquire backlinks. Write your best content for industry professional or business websites. Apart from guest posting, use Quora and Reddit to get backlinks. Just don’t throw away your website links, you might get banned.
Internal linking is as important as external linking. It might come as a surprise but let me explain. Suppose you have written an excellent blog on digital marketing and its impact on business. In the middle section of your blog, there is a line, “I have used these techniques to acquire 35K visitors on my website.” Those lines are enough to attract thousands of visitors who are landing on the digital marketing blog. Why not do it?
9. Google Analytics and Search Console
Google Analytics and Search Console are probably a lot useful than you thing. I have been using analytics and console for a year now and it has helped me increase my web traffic. Google Analytics gives you enough information on your audience's action and their engagement on the website. With Google analytics you can track your real-time traffic, location of your visitors and landing pages. You have even track your traffic source, bounce rate and time user spend on your sites.
Personally, I think Google Search Console is a powerful tool compared to google analytics. Search Console provides your website impression and clicks on your websites.
Google Search console provides enough information to analyze your search engine ranking and your most popular pages. It provides you the position of your pages along with their various search queries. You should not pay great attention to pages with the high positions but make sure to open your eyes wide on pages having a low position. Do some keyword research with Ubersuggest or any other keyword research tools? Search console can also be used to index your newly published blog or page.
Apart from these 9 techniques, target long-tail keywords, never underestimate UX and other various techniques. Understand your market, analyze the keywords, establish a good relationship with customers and optimize your business website to see growth on your business.
